Almost €2 million in Covid fines handed out during last fortnight of February

PSP and GNR police raked in almost €2 million in fines in the last two weeks of February, all taken from people found contravening Covid-19 combat measures. The average fine for each misdemeanor was €200, and the majority of the 9,416 fines were handed out for ‘failure to stay at home’. Over 1,600 people were fined for not complying with the order to remain within their borough boundaries at the weekends, and 563 for failure to wear a mask in public areas.
