Reporting statistics that hide endless social tragedy, Lusa news agency reveals that 658,900 Portuguese families were defaulting on mortgage payments at the end of September this year.
Figures from the Bank of Portugal show that the huge number of payment backlogs are actually an improvement on the situation at the end of June – when almost 688,000 families were in mortgage arrears, and better also than the situation in September 2012.
Nonetheless, mortgage arrears are families’ biggest headaches, and have led to the greatest ‘losses’ registered by Portuguese banks.
