After being approved a decade ago, Almada’s ‘water city’ project – described as Portugal’s largest urbanistic undertaking and one that will rejuvenate areas that used to be taken up by Lisnave shipyards – has been officially presented, with an international tender due to be launched by the summer.
The idea is for over 100 hectares to be taken up with new homes, parks, a hotel, museum, congress centre and marina.
Said Almada mayor Inês de Medeiros, Water City won’t simply be a dormitory town for the capital, it will create a new centrality for Almada, allowing for as many as 30,000 new residents.
The plan is expected to take 14 years to bring to fruition and is part of the wider Lisbon South Bay develoopment plan.
