More people than ever attended Allgarve events this year, with a 55 per cent increase in visitors compared with the 2009 programme.

Pancho Guedes and Berardo art exhibitions, Fura Dels Baus, Portimão Allgarve Gourmet, Anastacia and Jamie Cullum were the highlights this year, with a total of 189,710 people attending events compared with 122,000 last year.

Algarve Tourism president Nuno Aires told the Algarve Resident: “The Allgarve’10 programme mobilised more municipalities and private entities, ensured a greater number of events and captivated a wider audience. And all this was achieved with a similar financial investment as last year.

“Allgarve’10 has helped consolidate a programme that has already been described as excellent by Algarve tourists and residents.”

Allgarve Arte and Allgarve Street Entertainment attracted the largest numbers of visitors, with around 80,000 and 69,000 spectators respectively.

Gastronomy events had recorded an increase of almost 2,000 visitors, with one of the highlights being Portimão Allgarve Gourmet.

The music programme, which included artists such as Anastacia, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall, McCoy Tyner and Jean Luc Ponty, attracted more than 25,000 people. The highest concentration was recorded between June and September and the largest number of events occurred in Loulé, Portimão, Faro and Albufeira.

Part of the profits made from Allgarve’10 have gone to good causes with Turismo de Portugal and the Algarve Tourism Board delivering a total of €70,000 to 13 private institutions of social solidarity (IPSS).

Meanwhile, the 2011 edition will feature a new programme called Allgarve Nations.

“This new concept will be dedicated to the UK market and will include culture, sport, entertainment, food, music and other events related to British tourism,” said Nuno Aires.
