Aljezur proactive on forest fire threat

Aljezur Câmara has spent €170,000 in fire prevention works in the council.

In cooperation with Lagos and Vila do Bispo Câmaras, Aljezur has been able to implement and maintain a network of lanes in forest areas to facilitate fire apparatus access in case of emergency.

Due to the vastness of the forest areas, Aljezur Câmara says cooperation with Lagos and Vila do Bispo is paramount.

“Even in times of crisis, all efforts are needed to preserve the natural heritage in this area, which contributes to the sustainable development of the region,” said a câmara statement.

Intervention actions by the câmaras include the clearing of a 125 metre wide lane at strategic locations, to ensure unobstructed fire truck access.

In the 2011/2012 season, the clearing of forest lanes has covered an area of more than 620 hectares, representing a total cost of €171,854.

To complement these works, Aljezur Câmara also has a forest intervention municipal team (EMIF) which carries out maintenance works throughout the year.

During the critical fire season, the EMIF patrols forest areas and raises awareness among the local community about the importance of clearing their land to prevent fires and in the remainder months of the year, the team cultivates forest trees, having so far covered 120 hectares of land.
