Aljezur Mayor José Gonçalves has sent a letter to Prime Minister António Costa urging him to “gradually reopen” recreational fishing in the Algarve.
“The people of Aljezur have made a gigantic effort to follow the lockdown rules and have seen excellent results throughout this long and painful year,” he says in the letter.
“Thus, I am asking you to consider the possibility of opening recreational fishing in phases, allowing people to fish in their own parish of residence,” the mayor adds.
So far nearly 9,000 people have signed a petition to reopen recreational fishing immediately (click here).
