Aljezur International School “Play in the Parque” in Barão de São João

This year’s “Play in the Parque” at Parque de Merendas in the forest behind Barão de São João (Lagos) is taking place on Friday, July 3. The first production was staged in 2006 and this outdoor community theatre production has become a much anticipated annual event in the Algarve calendar.

Written by Karen Whitten and produced by Aljezur International School, the cast includes over 50 people of all ages and nationalities and is set in the 1940s aboard a cruise liner heading from Lagos to New York.

“Captain Burger’s Brush With Murder” sees Captain Angus Burger and Chief Engineer Scottie, both played by Year 10 students, joined by a motley collection of passengers such as Poubelle de Chaval and her gold-digging husband Bidet, the bank-robbing Lord and Lady Tottywott, the Great Giramali and his stunning assistant Honey Glitter and the dotty sisters Mave, Mim and Mo Butterly-Worthington.

All the passengers seem to have secrets to hide and the crew of the RMS Blunder take it upon themselves to expose the tricksters and pave the way for true love to run its course.

“We have an incredibly talented group of students who are creating their own characters and writing their own parts,” school director Karen told us. “Every year the audience and cast grow in numbers as more and more people ask to be involved and this year is shaping up to be the best yet.”

With surprise appearances and cabaret performances throughout, this journey of mystery, magic and mayhem is guaranteed to be a fun evening for all the family.

There will be signposts from the village of Barão de São João and audience members are invited to join the barbecue which begins at 5.30pm, with the performance itself starting at 7pm.
