Aljezur distributes 2,000 bags of sweet potatoes among Algarve’s hospital staff

As a ‘thank you’ for their hard work throughout the pandemic, Aljezur Council has distributed 2,000 bags of the borough’s famous sweet potatoes among the Algarve’s hospital staff.

Explains the council in a statement, the goal is to give something back to all the health professionals and hospital staff who have been at the frontline of the fight against Covid for nearly a year.

The council also explains that this is also a way of supporting local sweet potato producers, who have been struggling due to the pandemic that has led many restaurants and pastry chefs to suspend or reduce their activity.

But at the heart of it, the initiative aims to provide hospital staff with a “treat” and show them that “their courage and hard work are recognised”.

Aljezur promotes its sweet potatoes as the “best in the world”. Cooked in a variety of ways, the sweet potatoes are celebrated every year during the town’s Sweet Potato Festival, which last year could not go ahead due to the pandemic.
