Killer heat wave kills 13
Unrelenting hot weather, which has reached 50 Celsius in the shade, is causing mayhem across Algeria.Thirteen people have died of sunstroke, mostly elderly people. Numerous forest fires, 28 in total, have broken out so far. The heat wave has been going on since last weekend, and the whole country has been affected. Some fires in remote mountain regions are said to have been caused by army bombardments of Islamist hideouts. This is not the first time Algeria has been affected by soaring temperatures. Last year, dozens of people died during a fierce heat wave. Just six months ago, the worst snowfalls in more than 50 years paralysed the capital, Algiers.
