“Algarvia” – Amigos de Música Grand Finale

For the Amigos de Música, the 2018-19 concert season and present membership year ended with the birth of an original musical masterpiece – “Algarvia” by the young pianist, conductor and composer Alissa Firsova.

Our June recitals with Alissa Firsova on piano and Daniel Rowland on violin were certainly the best Grand Finale the Amigos could have hoped for.
This well-established private membership circle of music friends organises 18 public concerts annually in the rustic venue of Quinta dos Agostos, near Sta Bárbara de Nexe. These events bring world-class musicians to the Algarve, who are invited to give piano or chamber music recitals.

For the final concerts of the present season, I, as Amigos de Música president, took the initiative to commission a piece of music from one of “our” pianists, who loves being invited and has played for us various times. She had fallen in love with the Algarve.

This Anglo-Russian “Musical Wunderkind”, aged just 32, was so inspired by the special atmosphere and culture she got to know here that she wanted to express herself in the best way she can – through music. And thus, the idea of her opus 42 “Algarvia” was born.

– Night of the Carnations
– Sunrise Flight to the New World

In its three waves, she recreates special moments of her Algarve impressions: reflections of birth, life and death; saudade; the beginning of freedom; the flow of eternity.

In this intense piece for piano and violin, Alissa’s philosophy of life – “there is no ending, there are only new beginnings” – comes touchingly alive.

The Dutch violin virtuoso, Daniel Rowland, flowed along with his Guarneri del Gesù instrument, moving us to tears.

It was a great privilege for the Amigos de Música to have the world première of their own musical composition on Tuesday, June 11 as the Grand Finale of their 2018/19 membership year.

The next season begins on September 10 and 12 with two recitals for piano and viola performed by David Owen Norris and Paul Silverthorne.
