FARO’S CAFÉ ALIANÇA, the oldest café in the Algarve, has recently opened a hall of fame to display photographs of its most famous visitors. During the 20th century, the café, which first opened in 1908, has welcomed well-known national and international names such as feminist writer Simone de Beauvoir, novelist Marguerite Yourcenar, singer and poet José Afonso (the symbol of the Portuguese revolution), author António Ramos Rosa and Fado legend Amália Rodrigues. Among the local personalities that feature in the gallery are poet António Aleixo and author Júlio Almeida Carraputo.Café Aliança considers this to be their contribution to the programme for Faro National Capital of Culture.
