Algarve’s Monterosa olive oil brings home two medals from Japan

The Algarve’s Azeites Monterosa olive oil has been awarded two medals at Olive Japan 2019, described as the “most prestigious olive oil competition in Asia and one of the most important in the world”. Over 700 olive oils from 22 countries were judged.

The Moncarapacho-based company received a gold medal for its Monterosa Premium Picual variety and a silver medal for the Monterosa Premium Selection variety.
In a statement, the company said it was “the fifth year in a row that it wins a gold medal at this international competition”.

“This sequence of prizes is proof of the recognition of the quality and excellence that these olive oils receive on an international level,” it adds.
Monterosa olive oils are sold in dark bottles of 500ml and 200ml although there are also tasting kits including smaller 20ml bottles.

Their selection of olive oil varieties includes Premium Maçanilha, Cobrançosa, Verdeal, Picual as well as the Premium Selection which is produced with varieties selected by the producer’s internal team of tasters.

One of the most prominent varieties of the Premium Selection is the Frantoio, an Italian variety that is “being used increasingly in olive oils all over the world”. The producer has also recently launched a new olive oil ‘Horta do Félix’ which also mixes many varieties.
