Algarve's first Pickleball court opens at Jim Stewart Tennis Academy

The Jim Stewart Tennis Academy in Quinta do Lago has recently opened the Algarve’s first Pickleball court.
Originated in the United States, Pickleball has gained huge popularity in recent years to become a fully-accredited competition sport worldwide.
The game can be played as singles or doubles, using solid paddles of wood or composite material to strike a perforated polymer ball about the size of an orange.
The court is similar in size and layout to Badminton, whilst the rules resemble a mix of tennis and squash, with some modifications.
Serving must be with an underhand stroke from the waist. The zones closest to the net (about 2 metres deep) are non-volley areas. Points are scored by the serving side only – the first side to reach 11 points and leading by at least 2 points wins the contest.
The hollow but solid ball requires a crisp strike to achieve a firm shot and yet, because its speed quickly fades, it is easier to retrieve and return. So although it looks simple to play, Pickleball often has long, enjoyable rallies, yet not overly-strenuous. These characteristics lend it widespread appeal to all levels of ability and ages.
“Pickleball is all about placement,” Jim Stewart explains. “It can be tough to find a way past your opponent without a patient tactical approach, exchanging shots until you’re able to make a well-placed winner.”
