Algarve windsurfer runner-up in major international competition

Italy || Miguel Martinho, windsurfer for the Clube Naval de Portimão, made his region proud last Saturday (July 5) after finishing in second place in the Masters class of the World Formula Windsurfing Championship, which took place between June 30 and July 5 in Gallipoli, Italy.
The Portimão-born athlete won five out of the 15 regattas and battled it out until the end with Latvian opponent Janis Preiss, who ended up winning the championship in the Masters category.
“My clash with Janis was very good,” Martinho said on his Facebook page. “He is a great athlete, very consistent and super fast. Congratulations.”
Although the number one title was clearly within his reach, the local windsurfer still said the championship went better than he had expected.
Another Algarvean windsurfer João Pedro Santos also participated in the championship, but suffered from blistered hands and could not compete on the last day, finishing in 23rd place in the Masters class.
