Algarve wakes up to extremely rare snowfall

It is extremely rare but it has happened – snow has fallen on the Algarve this morning (January 19). It was mostly just a few flakes, but it is nonetheless an unusual event that has been caught on film by amazed locals in São Brás de Alportel, Salir, Moncarapacho, the Serra do Caldeirão mountain range and Vila Real de Santo António.

Videos can be seen on the Facebook page of Lagoa weather website Meteofontes, which reports temperatures as low as 2.4ºC and 2.6ºC in Carvoeiro and Estômbar and 0ºC in inland areas this morning.

Further snowfall is unlikely, however, as temperatures are expected to reach maximums of 11ºC and 12ºC in the Algarve, the website adds.

Elsewhere in Portugal, the Artic weather has been linked to a spike in death numbers over the last two days (click here).
