Algarve under ‘yellow alert’ due to heavy rain

Although the sun is still shining in the region, the Algarve is under ‘yellow alert’ due to forecasts of heavy rain which could continue until at least Friday and perhaps into the weekend.

The alert, which also warns of the possibility of thunder, will remain in place until at least 6am tomorrow, according to the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).

The bad weather is explained by the arrival of a new depression near Portugal, says local meteorologist Bruno Gonçalves on his Meteofontes Facebook page.

This depression could also bring strong winds, hail and thunder, he predicts. The worst of the weather is expected tomorrow and Friday across the whole country, but particularly in the centre and south of Portugal.
