Algarve tourism boss wants lifeguards on beaches before the summer

Algarve tourism boss Desidério Silva wants the region’s beaches to start being manned by lifeguards much earlier in the year, at least by the start of spring.

The idea is to make beaches safer for holidaymakers after May Day bank holiday saw four drownings in other parts of the country at unsupervised beaches.

In the Algarve, lifeguards started in Albufeira this week (May 15) but will not be on duty elsewhere until June 1.
