A guide detailing all the events and New Year’s Eve parties taking place in the Algarve this month has been launched by the regional tourism board (RTA).
“New Year’s Eve has attracted thousands of people to the Algarve for years and this year will be no exception,” the RTA says in a statement.
“The hard part,” says the board, “will be deciding where to celebrate the New Year.”
Albufeira is one of Portugal’s most popular New Year’s destinations and will be hosting a five-day programme including concerts, a stand-up comedy festival, a medieval fair and a parade featuring circus performers.
The highlight will be the New Year party which will begin at 9.30pm on December 31 at the town’s seaside square Praça dos Pescadores with a concert by Fernando Daniel, the winner of Portugal’s fourth ‘The Voice’ TV singing contest.
The party will continue with a DJ set by Rádio Comercial’s Wilson Honrado, which promises to keep people dancing until the fireworks shows, which will begin at midnight at the square as well as Praia da Oura and Praia de Olhos de Água.
The last act will be a concert by award-winning Portuguese soul and funk band HMB.
Portimão is also planning a three-day party to welcome in the new year. Festivities will begin with a performance by Portuguese reggae star Richie Campbell on December 29, followed by a concert by pop singer David Fonseca on December 30.
Musical entertainment on the last night of the year will be by Brazilian group Axé Brasil and DJ Oskar, who will keep revellers dancing until 3am. All shows begin at 10pm and will take place at the town’s riverside.
There will also be firework displays at the riverside as well as Praia da Rocha and Alvor.
Also popular among revellers is Quarteira, which is once again promising a fun-filled programme at the Praça do Mar seaside square.
Local DJ Rahim will get the party going at 9.30pm before Portuguese rock group Quinta do Bill take the stage at 10.30pm. A musical firework display is planned for midnight before electronic music duo Karetus take the reins and keep the party going into the night.
Elsewhere, Portuguese bands Amor Electro and Íris will be headlining the New Year’s parties in Lagos and Faro, respectively.
