Having shocked and delighted audiences across the world, Eve Ensler’s ground-breaking play is to be performed by the Silver Mask Theatre Group in the Algarve on July 16.
‘The Vagina Monologues’ was first performed as a one-woman show by Ensler in 1997. In only one year, the show, which aims to raise awareness of abuse against women, became a controversial sell-out around the globe and by 2013 it had been staged in 140 countries in 50 languages.
The play has been performed in London, New York and Los Angeles, by an impressive list of celebrity actresses such as Kate Winslet, Whoopi Goldberg, Rula Lenska and UK sitcom stars Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph. It returned to the London’s Theatre Royal earlier this year.
‘The Vagina Monologues’ is a series of ‘stories’ based on over 200 interviews held with a diverse group of women. Through these women’s individual experiences, it addresses issues such as sex, love, rape and childbirth and unabashedly explores a forbidden zone – the vagina.
‘The Vagina Monologues’ is moving and poignant, yet laugh-out-loud funny in places. The Silver Mask Theatre Group will perform the show at the Galeria Arte Algarve in Lagoa.
Jackie O’Grady, the group’s artistic director comments: “Those who are embarrassed by intimate detail perhaps shouldn’t come to see the show – or maybe it’s those who shy away from the word ‘vagina’ that have all the more reason to buy a ticket.”
On Valentine’s Day in 1998, Ensler established V-Day as a charitable organisation. The charity’s mission is to end violence against women and girls worldwide.
The Silver Mask Theatre Group is a troupe of international amateur thespians living in the Algarve. Based in Silves and founded by artistic director Jackie O’Grady, the group performs a variety of productions across the region, including after dinner theatre and staged productions.
The performance starts at 8.30pm and the doors open at 7pm.
Entrance fee is €10. Tickets are available from the gallery or you can book your seats by email: [email protected]
