Filipe Santos, one of Portugal’s most talented and successful Down’s syndrome swimmers, has added seven new medals to his resumé after an amazing display at the 1st Open European Tri-Games 2021.
The event was organised by the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) and held in Ferrara, Italy between October 6 and 10.
Filipe Santos, who competes for Lagoa Académico Clube, won four gold medals in relay races, as well as a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and two bronze medals in the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle relay.
“It is with great pride that we followed the results achieved by our athlete Filipe Santos. He is a true champion who found excellent conditions for swimming in Lagoa. Thank you and congratulations, Filipe,” said Lagoa Mayor Luís Encarnação.
The local council also congratulated Filipe Santos’ coach Paulo Sousa, as well as the rest of the national team’s athletes and staff for the “extraordinary results” they achieved.
Said the local authority, swimming is a sport that has been growing in the borough, especially last season, with a “growing number of swimmers, better results and greater emphasis on adapted swimming.”
