A short-film entitled ‘Algarve’ and focusing on the Algarve’s surfing potential will be premiering on Saturday at Sagres youth hostel – showing later at a number of venues throughout the region.
Director of the film, Pedro Henrique, told Lusa news agency that the film – designed to showcase the Algarve coast’s potential – was made on beaches between Portimão and Vila do Bispo, using drones and helicopters.
“There had been no previous surfing movie filmed in the Algarve that showed the quality of the waves,” the professional surfer explained, adding that what most impressed him about conditions here was the variety of “good surfing spots”. They can be found “almost everywhere”, he said.
The fact that there are “very few” people in the water is another plus, Henrique enthused, admitting that it is a pity the region is so ‘under-exploited’ with a dearth of world-class events.
“The Algarve has the potential, in terms of waves, to organise an event like the one in Peniche (ASP World Tour),” he said.
Henrique will now try and show the film in countries like Brazil and the US.
Of Portuguese descent but only recently arrived in the country, the young director also hopes his film will inspire a new generation of surfers.
In the meantime, it will get its first showing this Saturday at 6pm in Sagres’ youth hostel.
Then on Sunday, it will show at Faro’s Portuguese Youth Institute at 7pm.
It will also play at TEMPO’s small auditorium in Portimão next weekend (February 8), at 7pm.
Other surfers taking part include João Guedes, Eduardo Fernandes, Miguel Mouzinho and Algarve supremo Marlon Lipke.
