Supporters from the Algarve helped to raise more than €5,000 for the UK-based Macmillan Cancer Support charity by donating prizes for a golf tournament in Scotland on October 2.
More than 100 golfers braved the rain at the Drumoig, a golf course eight miles from the home of golf, St Andrews, with the golf followed by a charity auction to raise further money for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
The event was organised by Eddie O´Neill in memory of his wife Sarah-Jane who died from cancer three years ago.
Eddie and Sarah-Jane were friends of Algarve residents Brian and Terri Randall and the couple decided to show their support for the charity event by organising prizes for the charity auction.
Brian Randall told the Algarve Resident: “I knew Eddie and Sarah-Jane very well as we both lived near each other in England before he retired to Scotland and I moved to the Algarve.
“When I heard about the charity tournament, I decided that not only would I play, I would also get some Algarve businesses involved in supporting it.”
Brian Randall approached Rui Gago from Pestana to donate prizes and managed to obtain 16 rounds of golf on Pestana courses while Richard Ballington of Algarve Golf donated accommodation at Gramacho and Brian and his wife Terri gave transfers for the winners.
”I put together a package of golf, accommodation and transfers to make one really great prize which I think helped to increase the amount raised on the day for the charity,” said Brian Randall.
“We were also given a very generous prize by Jane Cockayne and Jeremy Southall, the developers at Boa Nova, who donated a seven-night stay in a two-bedroom town house at the development near Carvoeiro.”
After arranging all of the sponsorship from the Algarve, Brian then took part in the tournament himself, finishing in tenth place on the day.
