Algarve seeks to attract doctors and nurses for temporary summer jobs

Portugal’s Secretary of State for Health has signed a government order allowing doctors and nurses working elsewhere in the country to temporarily transfer to the Algarve to work at the region’s public hospitals and health centres.

The announcement was made by the secretary of state António Lacerda Sales during the national health board’s (DGS) daily Covid-19 pandemic press conference.

This is a method the government has used in recent years to tackle the region’s chronic shortage of doctors which worsens in the summer as the Algarve’s population increases.

This year, it is especially needed given the need to improve the care provided at the region’s beach health units due to the pandemic, the secretary of state said.
