Algarve Ryder

Frequent Algarve visitor and Quinta do Lago Ambassador as well as the resort’s Golf Academy founder, Paul McGinley, has been appointed Europe’s 2014 Ryder Cup team captain.

The 46-year-old from Dublin is the first Irishman to be accorded the honour following two successful stints as vice-captain in 2010 and 2012, and is best remembered for his nine-foot put on the 18th which clinched the 2002 title for the Europeans at the Belfry.

The fact that McGinley has never been on the losing side in golf’s oldest and most prestigious team competition bodes well for the latest clash with the Americans at Gleneagles next year.

Meanwhile, Algarve visitors and residents alike can meet the man in the flesh as he presides over several golf clinics throughout the year at the Quinta do Lago academy which proudly bears his name.
