Rotary Club Estoi Palace International is planning to hold a number of fundraising events in the Algarve in support of the ShelterBox organisation, which provides shelter and lifesaving equipment to disaster victims across the world.
The first event, a wine tasting and dinner, is to be held on April 8 at Restaurante/Garrafeira Veneza in Mem Moniz, near Paderne, where wine producer Rui Virginia will present his award-winning wines from Quinta do Barranco Longo.
ShelterBox was founded in 2000 by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian in the UK. Although there were many organisations and agencies providing disaster aid in the form of food and medicine there was little support in providing shelter to help the victims through the first few days, weeks and months as they tried to rebuild their lives. ShelterBox was launched to fill that need. Each box provides an extended family of ten with emergency shelter, and life saving humanitarian aid items that restore their dignity and give them the means to start rebuilding their lives.
ShelterBox has grown rapidly in response to need and has provided emergency relief following more than 85 disasters in over 55 countries.
That need continues as ShelterBox has despatched thousands of boxes to Haiti and is now also active in Chile.
ShelterBox, which is a global Rotary Club project, relies entirely on donations to make its work possible.
