Algarve receives four ‘Municipality of the Year’ nominations

Four Algarve towns – Lagos, Lagoa, Albufeira and Loulé – have been nominated for the 2016 ‘Municipality of the Year’ awards.

The distinctions attributed by the University of Minho are designed to “acknowledge and award” successful projects implemented by councils.

Lagos made the shortlist with a project that aims to improve life quality of its elderly, entitled ‘Lagos na Rota do Envelhecimento Activo’; Lagoa for its cork recycling scheme ‘Green Cork’ as well as its environmental education programmes; Loulé for ‘Loulé Criativo’, a project that supports creative work carried out by locals, and Albufeira for its sustainable efforts to control the processionary caterpillar that infests pine trees by placing nests of blue tits (which feed on the larvae) in local trees.

The eventual winners will be announced on Friday (June 3) at Forte do Beliche in Sagres, Vila do Bispo – the town that won the award last year (click here).
