Portimão port was this week promoted at the Cruise Shipping Convention, the largest event of its kind in the world, in Miami.
It was attended by 980 exhibitors from 120 countries or regions and the main operators for the sector.
A total of 10,000 industry professionals were expected to visit the event, which saw the port of Portimão being promoted as a privileged gateway to trans-Atlantic cruise ships on their way to Mediterranean destinations.
Forty ships are scheduled to dock at the Portimão port this year, while between 2007 and 2011 the port saw an increase in passenger numbers of 673%, from 5,798 passengers to 44,841.
Works to enable the port to accommodate two large scale ships at the same time as well as the construction of a modern passenger terminal are currently being evaluated.
