Longstanding PSD party politician Mendes Bota is to stand down from his role as the Algarve regional party leader.
After six years in the position, the often outspoken politician will be making way for new leader, Luís Gomes, Vila Real de Santo António Mayor, although the former has vowed to continue to participate within the party and to help his replacement.
“I leave the party better than I found it. Financially healthy, logistically better equipped, politically stronger and with increased supporters,” said Mendes Bota.
He added: “I am not leaving, I am here to stay and will continue to invest in supporting the causes that are dearest to me, namely the uncompromising defenceoif the Algarve, regionalisation, combating violence against women and equal opportunities.”
Meanwhile, the leader of the PS political party, Miguel Freitas, was re-elected as president of PS Algarve for his fourth term with 91 percent of the vote.
