THE ALGARVE Orchestra began the year with traditional New Year concerts in Loulé’s Cine-Teatro and Olhão’s Matriz Church.
With a programme composed of arias by Strauss, Verdi, Brahms and Donizetti, Loulé’s concert included interpretations of Viennese waltzes to celebrate the New Year. In Olhão, there was music from Handel, Manfredini and Mozart. Maestro Osvaldo Ferreira conducted both concerts.
Moving ahead, Faro Municipal Theatre is staging a concert tonight (January 6) at 9.30pm to mark Epiphany with performances from soprano Lara Martins and baritone José Corvelo. Maestro Osvaldo Ferreira will also conduct this concert, which will play various works such as Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow. The January programme continues tomorrow (January 7) with a concert in Lagos’ Santa Maria Church at 9.30pm, conducted by Maestro António Sérgio Ferreira. Aside from Viennese waltzes, there will also be a rendition of Mozart’s 35th Symphony. Book your ticket on 282 762 055.
On January 20 and 21, the Algarve Orchestra will perform in Tavira’s Carmo Church and in the Matriz Church in Portimão where Images, a rare piece from Portuguese composer Cristóvão Silva, will debut. Maestro Osvaldo Ferreira will again conduct the orchestra, in which soloist Olga Bianca Manescu will play the cello.
