Algarve Open brings record windfall

It was recently revealed that the Portuguese Algarve Open 2003 made over eight million euros from the televised broadcasting of the event. The announcement was made by Amen Corner, from the Ballesteros Group, at a meeting of the Executive Commission of the Algarve Tourist Board (RTA). The Algarve Open was shown in 32 countries, including Denmark, England, France, Germany and Spain, and accounted for 457 hours of broadcasting, an increase of 150 hours on the previous tournament.

This year was the 48th event and was shown for the first time in Australia, the Middle East and also in Hong Kong. According to statistics between January and May 2004, there were 478 national and local news stories about the event, while Portuguese sporting sites recorded 223 articles. The official website of the event (www.openportugal.com) has now been visited a total of 89,966 times.
