Algarve on top with recycling

More waste material than ever before was recycled in the Algarve by ALGAR, the company responsible for solid waste treatment in the Algarve.

According to data collected by ALGAR, more than 16,600 tonnes of waste was recycled in the 16 municipalities of the Algarve between January and August 2011.

The per capita amounts of recycling were 14.7kg of paper and card, 19kg of glass and 3.15kg of plastic during the first eight months of 2011. Between January and August 2011, 8,012 tonnes of glass (compared to 7,882 in 2010), 6,365 tonnes of paper and card (compared to 5,688 in 2010) and 1,464 tonnes of plastic (compared to 1,333 in 2010) were collected.

A spokesman for ALGAR said: “It is clear that the various awareness campaigns promoted by ALGAR around the Algarve have been effective and we will continue to focus on increasing our work to inform residents about recycling through environmental educational campaigns.”
