Faro Musicians Association (ARCM), which received an eviction order from the court in February 2010, has sent a letter to all 2011 presidential candidates claiming that this decision is “an attack on culture”.
Manager of ARCM Armindo Silva told Lusa news agency: “We will not leave the site until there is an alternative.”
Aiming to raise the problem at a regional and national level, ARCM has started a petition, which already has 3,200 signatures, but needs to reach 4,000 to get the subject discussed in the Portuguese Parliament.
ARCM was established in 1990, has over 400 members and hosts 18 rehearsal rooms for 31 bands, joining more than 150 musicians of all musical styles in the Algarve.
It is in downtown Faro, near the train station, and received an eviction notice from the Faro court which requires it to vacate the space, which is earmarked for a real estate luxury project.
