The Algarve’s hotel sector continues to set new benchmarks this year, having celebrated its best October since the start of the millennium.
Data from the region’s hotelier association (AHETA) shows that 75% of hotel rooms were booked last month, 3.1% up from last year and the highest percentage recorded since 1999.
The positive results were helped by an increase in the number of German holidaymakers (+4.4 percentage points), as well as more tourists from France, Belgium, Poland, Switzerland and Ireland. However, there were fewer British holidaymakers (-5.8pp).
Data also shows that Carvoeiro/Armação de Pêra (+15.3%) and Portimão/Praia da Rocha (+11.1%) recorded the highest increases in bookings, while in Vilamoura/Quarteira/Quinta do Lago they were down 15%.
There were also more bookings in every hotel category except five-star hotels, which have seen numbers dropping 6.5% since the start of the year.
Business volume overall increased 9.8%.
