36.9% of hotel rooms were booked in January
2023 is off to a great start for the Algarve’s hotel sector, which just celebrated its best January in the last 20 years.
According to the region’s hotelier association (AHETA), 36.9% of the Algarve’s available hotel rooms – many hotels and tourist establishments close during the winter – were booked last month.
While it is the best percentage in the last two decades, it is still a few percentage points away from the record set in 2000 (40.3%). However, it is 3.8 percentage points above 2019 and 2.6 percentage points above 2020.
The good results were helped by increases in the Irish (+1pp) and British (+0,4pp) markets, as well as “important increases” in the Dutch, Belgian and Canadian markets when compared to 2019.
Tavira was the area where bookings increased the most compared to 2019 (+18pp), followed by Faro/Olhão (+13,2 pp) and Vilamoura/Quarteira/Quinta do Lago (+11,5 pp).
