Algarve hit by floods on Christmas Day

Five people of several nationalities had to be rescued by helicopter after heavy rain led to Ribeira de Bensafrim in Lagos bursting its banks and trapping them at home on Christmas Eve.

The river overflowed and strong currents trapped the residents inside the property, which used to be a warehouse but has been converted into small rental apartments.

The residents, including a seven-year-old girl, had to be hoisted into a Civil Protection helicopter and taken to safety.

Residents blame Lagos Câmara for neglecting to clear the stream of blockages and debris, leading to it overflowing.

The Lagos area was particularly affected by floods, with a section of the EN125 in the Vale das Lamas area having to be cut off to traffic due to it being submerged.

Portimão, Faro, Albufeira and Tavira were also affected by the heavy rain, with clearance work having to be carried out by council teams on Christmas Day.
