Algarve resident Peter Booker will be speaking about The Restoration of 1640 this month on behalf of the Algarve History Association.
On November 22 in the Municipal Library of Lagoa at 6.30pm, Peter will investigate the reasons behind Portugal’s December 1 public holiday.
Peter was puzzled by the holiday and asked: “Restoration Day? What does this mean? And why does it need a national holiday to state its importance?”
Peter discovered that in 1640, after 60 years of rule by the Kings of Spain, the Duke of Bragança took back the throne of Portugal and became D. João IV.
A second talk will be held on November 25, in the Municipal Library of Tavira, at 11am, where Peter Booker will again discuss how much Portugal’s independence really cost them.
Both talks are free of charge.
