Algarve History Association events in October

Algarve History Association begins its autumn programme on October 10 with the presentation by author-illustrator Peter Bellchambers of his new book ‘Tavira Through My Eyes’.

The history of the town of Tavira is presented in a series of scenes combining present-day photographs and Peter’s imagined scenes from the past. The narrator of this story is a Portuguese podengo, Pongo. Peter will repeat his presentation on the following evening in Lagoa.

The first concert in the AHA annual series will take place on Sunday, October 16, at 4pm, at Quintinha da Música in Tavira. The association will welcome back Portuguese pianist Vasco Dantas, who also opened their season in 2021.

Vasco will present a programme devoted to ‘water and wine’, featuring pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninov, Gershwin and Wagner, and there will be opportunities for wine tasting as a part of the event. Reservations at €20 can be made through [email protected].

Lastly, on Tuesday, October 25 in Lagoa and Friday, October 28 in Tavira, Peter will present his thoughts on ‘The Christian Re-Conquest of the Algarve’.

This story covers the years 1189-1249, from the first conquest of Silves to the completion of the conquest by the usurper king, D Afonso III.
