Around 1.7 million people do not have a family doctor in Portugal
The Algarve Health Administration (ARS Algarve) has announced the hiring of 14 new GPs for the region’s health centres.
The doctors will be joining the teams of the Personalised Healthcare Units in the boroughs of Albufeira, Faro, Lagoa, Loulé, Monchique, Olhão, Portimão, Quarteira, São Brás de Alportel and Tavira, which will “expand the coverage of patients with a family doctor in the region.”
Two welcoming sessions were held for the new doctors on June 1 and 15 and attended by ARS Algarve president Paulo Morgado, who thanked them for their interest in working in the Algarve and stressed the importance of their “commitment to the locations where they will be working.”
Around 1.7 million people in Portugal do not have a family doctor, according to the latest data from the National Health Service (SNS) transparency portal.
Nuno Jacinto, president of the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine, has warned that the number will continue increasing until the government takes measures to maintain doctors in the SNS.
