Algarve has six new bowls umpires

A sunny Monday, October 23 greeted two English Bowls Umpires Association training personnel. Vic Perry and Vernon Findell had arrived in the Algarve to assess bowling candidates who had already completed a thorough written assessment some months earlier in the year. A full day was spent explaining in depth and practising many of the exercises that would be examined on Tuesday.

October 24 dawned bright and early, with the nervous candidates gathering at Alvor Bowling Club to be examined. Six Bowls Algarve members were successful in their training and assessment, and the Algarve can now boast six newly qualified umpires. Joe Scott of Tavira Bowling Club, Maggie Dance and Stuart Buckley of Alvor Bowling Club, Jean King, Miriam Hare and Peter Hare of Balaia Bowls Club all were successful.

October 26 was the beginning of the Super 10’s Competition, which at this early stage of the competition has Valverde at the top of the league with Pedras at the bottom, and Tavira yet to play.

Saturday, October 28 was the beginning of the Winter League Competition. Alvor Scorpions are at the top of League A, whilst Alvor Amigos are at the top of League B.
