Learn about gardening in Portugal and pick up specialist plants during the Mediterranean Garden Fair taking place tomorrow (Saturday) between 10am and 2pm at La Réserve in Santa Bárbara de Nêxe.
This is the second annual event organised by the Mediterranean Garden Society and will feature specialist nurseries, short talks and information for water wise gardens.
Following the success of the inaugural event, organisers have moved to the larger venue of La Réserva situated near the Algarve Stadium with ample parking for visitors and easy access from the A22.
Interested gardeners will be able to buy plants directly from the people who have propagated them while there will also be demonstrations and question and answer sessions about planning and maintaining drought tolerant gardens in the Algarve.
More specific short talk topics at the fair are to include Using native plants in the garden, Natural swimming ponds and Grasses for dry gardens.
“November is the start of the gardening year and the ideal time of the year to buy and plant in the Algarve. Winter rains will ease the plants into their new homes and help them get established before the return of the summer months of heat and drought,” said Rosie Peddle.
Plants available to buy at the fair will include bulbs, grasses, succulents, lavenders, shrubs and trees while the members of the Mediterranean Garden Society will also be offering a selection of plants and seeds that they have grown in their own gardens.
“Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk with fellow gardeners and there will be plenty of good advice as well as moral support available from members at the society clinic,” said Rosie Peddle.
Admission to the event costs one Euro and includes entry to the prize raffle.
