Algarve GM free

A recent report, conducted by the Assembly of European Regions and by the environmentalists Amigos da Terra, has revealed that the Algarve is the only region in Portugal that does not have any genetically modified (GM) plantation farms. The study also revealed that only 2,000 regions in Europe, such as Salzburg in Austria, Abruzzi and Lazio in Italy, and Wales and Scotland in the UK have been considered GM free. The report concludes that the GM free status is an advantage in today’s consumer-led world – 61 per cent of Europeans are worried about GM products and 50 per cent refuse to consume them. But scientists and specialists warn that there is a risk of GM crops contaminating the region’s farms by wind and mosquitoes.
