Liga Portugal Betclic:
Casa Pia 1-3 Farense
Portimonense 0-2 Gil Vicente
Farense quickly put their latest defeat to Portimonense behind them when running out the convincing winners away to Casa Pia last Saturday evening as their erstwhile Algarve rivals fell woefully short of that performance at home against Gil Vicente 24 hours later.
That 2-0 defeat was best summarised by still manager Paulo Sérgio following the match. “Pure and simple, we did not compete, perhaps the most depressing and uninspired match since I arrived here,” he said. “Everything was bad, we were cowardly, hiding most of the time, and we should hang our heads in shame – we did not turn up.”
Portimonense now have the best part of two weeks to regroup and prepare for their next encounter away to Boavista on Sunday, January 28 (3.30pm) knowing that any more such performances will see them get heavily involved in yet another relegation battle.
In contrast, Farense put in a highly disciplined shift of counter-attacking football at Casa Pia which saw only seven shots towards the target result in three goals.
A 24th-minute Mattheus Oliveira dummy allowed Marlo Matias to open the scoring before a Zach Muscat header doubled the away advantage before the interval.
With 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Bruno Duarte then had the Casa Pia defence at sixes and sevens before calmly slotting home the third, a lead which a late Fernando Andrade consolation goal could not threaten.
The ‘Lions of Faro’ now occupy a lofty seventh place in the league table and next welcome FC Porto to their São Luís stadium on Sunday, January 28 for a 6pm kick-off.
