Algarve football round-up: Keeper’s ball!

Liga Portugal Betclic:

Benfica 1-1 Farense

Portimonense 1-1 Famalicão

Both Algarve top-tier clubs earned highly credible draws over the weekend largely thanks to outstanding performances from their respective goalkeepers.

Last Friday evening, Benfica bombarded Farense with a total of 37 shots on goal at the Stadium of Light forcing keeper Ricardo Velho into no less than 13 important saves.

In consequence, the match was still goalless at half time, allowing the Algarveans to take the lead against the run of play through a Cláudio Falcão header shortly after the restart. Unfortunately, Benfica forward Rafa finally managed to find a way past Velho 10 minutes later to produce the draw.

On Saturday afternoon, Portimonense were also outplayed for long periods of their home encounter with Famalicão and only their keeper Vinicius stood between the then 0-1 score line and a potentially much greater deficit by the interval.

An eventful second 45 minutes then saw Hélio Varela equalise from a Jasper cross before Ronie Carrillo received a straight red card for dangerous play and Paulo Sérgio’s 10 men, including the outstanding Vinicius, hold out for a share of the points.

Farense are back in action at home against Estrela Amadora this Friday evening while Portimonense return away to Moreirense on Sunday afternoon.
