Baby foods – particularly milk-based varieties – are desperately sought by the Algarve Food Bank.
Talking to Lusa news agency this week, the food bank’s regional boss Nuno Alves warned that children in the boroughs of Olhão , Faro, Loulé and Portimão are those that most need support in a district that has as many as 1,000 babies and toddlers on the food support list.
In all, the food bank helps 16,000 people in the Algarve, although Alves maintains as many as 25,000 are in need of help when it comes to maintaining a proper diet.
In the case of baby food products, these are rarely donated by people supporting food bank campaigns, as they are comparatively expensive.
Thus a new idea, “Separar para Alimentar” is now underway. It is an initiative in which people are encouraged to donate items for recycling, the proceeds of which will then go towards the purchase of baby foods.
Recycling bins available for the new campaign can be found at both the Algar eco-centres and at Banco Alimentar premises.
Meantime, other essentials required by the food bank include flour, rice and olive oil.
