Algarve fish markets raise awareness about marine litter

Don’t be surprised if this month you find the fresh fish counter at your local market piled up with marine litter.

The initiative, entitled “Action Marine Litter!” (Ação Lixo Marinho!), has been developed by the Tavira Live Science Centre and aims to raise awareness about marine debris and its impact on sea life, the local economy and society in general.

After a successful first edition last year, this time five markets are taking part, with visitors able to see for themselves just a fraction of the type of rubbish that is discarded into the sea.

Only one or two fish counters at each of the markets will be used for the “Action Marine Litter!” project, so visitors can rest assured that there will be plenty of fresh fish and seafood for sale.

At the Tavira Municipal Market, the “Action Marine Litter!” counter can be visited on Fridays and Saturdays until September 11 from 10am to 12.30pm.

At the Lagos’ Avenida Municipal Market, the initiative will be held on September 14 while the Faro, Quarteira and Albufeira markets will also take part throughout the month of September (dates to be announced).
