Algarve firefighters put out second wildfire in less than a week

A fire broke out in the rural area of Benaciete in São Bartolomeu de Messines, Silves today. The blaze has already been put out, but 25 firefighters are still in the area to ensure it does not reignite.

Authorities were alerted shortly before noon and around 30 firefighters were sent to battle the blaze. It took closely three hours for the fire to be extinguished.

This is the second wildfire to break out in the Algarve in less than a week. On Monday, a fire destroyed scrubland near the Armação de Pêra camping site before it was brought under control.

The Algarve municipalities of Silves, Loulé, S. Brás de Alportel, Tavira and Alcoutim are all on “maximum fire alert” today due to the dry and hot weather.
