The first Algarve Dance Open is taking place this Saturday (October 7) at the Centro de Congressos do Arade in Parchal, Lagoa.
The new dance competition is designed to encourage the artistic and technical development of young people, from four to 21 years of age, in a wide variety of classes and style of dance, from ballet to contemporary dance, jazz to tap, and folklore to musical theatre in a competitive but friendly environment.
Both national and international schools are represented this year and many more have shown interest for next year. The international jury has many prizes to distribute, including workshops and summer school across Europe and as far afield as Texas, USA.
The aims are to build as many bridges as possible in this artistic world and for the youngsters to take pleasure in shared goals. It is also hoped that the competition becomes established in the cultural calendar of the Algarve.
Although initially programmed for two days, the competition has been compressed into a tight schedule for the Saturday only.
The public is welcome to share in the experience and witness the dedication and skill of the young dancers and choreographic inventiveness of the teachers.
Tickets cost €3 a session or €10 for the day, including the closing gala on Saturday evening. Tickets can be bought on the day at the front desk.
Doors will open at 8am for registration, followed by an open warm-up class, with the competition starting at 10am. There will be a prize-giving ceremony, a break for lunch and then the second session will begin around 2pm. At the end of the afternoon, there will be an improvisation competition and then the gala from 6.30pm until 9pm.
There will be a café for refreshments at the venue and plenty of parking.
