Algarve could be a winner

THE ALGARVE will be competing in a total of 12 categories at next week’s World Travel Awards 2007.

The Algarve is competing in six European and six national categories in the awards, one of the most prestigious prizes in the travel and tourism industry.

In the European categories, the Algarve has been nominated for Europe’s leading Dive Destination and Praia Dona Ana in Lagos is competing for Europe’s leading beach. Vila Joya, near Praia da Galé is competing for two categories; Europe’s leading Boutique Hotel and Europe and Portugal’s leading suite with the Royal suites 1001 and 2001.

Hotel Quinta do Lago has been nominated for Europe’s leading golf resort while Aqualand in Alcantarilha is hoping to win the prize for Europe’s Leading Waterpark Attraction.

On a national level, Vila Joya and Monte do Casal hotels in Estoi will be competing for Leading Boutique Hotel in Portugal and Vila Vita Parc in Porches for the title of Leading Conference Hotel.

Hotel Quinta do Lago, The Sheraton Algarve Hotel at Pine Cliffs Resort, Vila Sol Spa and Golf Resort in Vilamoura and Vila Vita Parc are all in the competition to win Leading Golf Resort in Portugal.

The Award for Portugal’s Leading Resort may go to the Hotel Quinta do Lago, Le Meridien Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo Golf Course in Vale do Lobo, Le Meridien Penina Golf and Resort at Penina or The Sheraton Algarve Hotel at Pine Cliffs Resort.

Hotel Quinta do Lago and the Vila Sol Spa and Resort have been nominated for the Leading Spa in Portugal. A spokesman from the Região de Turismo do Algarve, the Algarve’s regional tourism board, said: “The nominations reflect the international recognition of the quality of the destination, as the World Travel Awards objective is to identify and award prizes to cases of success.”

Professionals from the tourism industry around the world will vote for the winners on Tuesday, October 9 at a ceremony in Newcastle in England.
