Algarve canoeist crowned European champion in K1 200m

Kevin Santos receives gold medal following “photo finish” review

Portuguese canoeist Kevin Santos, from Kayak Clube Castores do Arade, was crowned European champion in the K1 200m at the European Championships in Munich last Sunday.

Having initially been awarded fifth place, the Portuguese Canoeing Federation asked for a review of the “photo finish” images. Upon verification, these proved that the athlete from the Algarve club was the first to cross the finish line. The organisation swiftly rectified the results and declared the Portuguese athlete European champion.

As reported by Lusa, Kevin Santos won in 36.975 seconds, followed by Latvian Robert Akmens (37.028s) and Sweden’s Petter Menning (37.055s), canoeists who went down a place on the podium.

This is the second medal won by athletes from the Kayak Clube Castores do Arade in the European multisports events. Para-athlete Norberto Mourão won bronze in the paracanoe VL2 class last Saturday.
