Algarve bowls report

An extra round of fixtures in midweek saw some more surprises. The Alvor Greens stumbled yet again, this time at home to the Pedras Panthers, who won by 49-41 and by six points to two, thus severely denting the Greens’ hopes of retaining their championship – although all is not yet lost.

The Albufeira Cats were also at Alvor against the Amigos and the home team came away with a very good win against the league leaders by 55-47 and five points to three. The Alvor Harlequins were also at home and entertained the PDF Sinners.

Harlequins have been very consistent this season and continued this form with another victory by 54-47, although the points were split four apiece. Sinners having had a good run of form themselves recently.

Amendoeira Nuts were host to the PDF Crusaders and earned themselves a nice home win by 50-44 and six points to two. The remaining two games were at Valverde where the Vulcans played the Alvor Gladiators and were narrowly defeated by the visitors 51-46.

Gladiators taking five points to the Vulcans three. Finally the Vikings took on neighbours Tavira Tigers and another win saw Vikings secure all eight points and close the gap on the Greens and the Cats.

The first round of the annual Cameron Cup double rink competition was held on February 23. Each club fields two fours against each other, one playing at home and the other playing away – the aggregate score to decide the winner.

Albufeira defeated Amendoeira by an aggregate of 51-21, Alvor triumphed over Pedras by 44-20 and Tavira overcame PDF by 39-29. Valverde had a bye into the semi finals and are joined by Alvor, Tavira and Albufeira on Saturday March 16 at Tavira, where the semi finals and final are traditionally held as the Cameron Cup was originally donated by Bill and Joan Cameron from Tavira.

Another lovely day, another interesting set of results as the league programme moves into the last few fixtures. Alvor Greens got back on track after a wobbly two weeks, by defeating the Alvor Harlequins by 57-36 and taking a much needed eight points.

Over at PDF, the Sinners maintained their recent run of good results by beating the visiting Alvor Amigos by 54-37 and earning themselves another eight points. Meanwhile Pedras Panthers were at home to Valverde Vulcans and a very tight match saw Vulcans triumph by 47-42 and by six points to two. Tavira Tigers continued their seesaw season by beating the PDF Crusaders by 57-42 and by six points to two.

Alvor Gladiators are another unpredictable crew and this week they proved this by beating the highly fancied Valverde Vikings 55-46, although Vikings did well to split the points four each. The final match saw Albufeira Cats entertain the visiting Amendoeira Nuts. Cats continued their chase for the title with a very convincing win by 104 – 14 and by eight points to nil. All now depends upon the clash between the Greens and the Cats over at Alvor.

As a final note, may I just say how nice it was to see John Freeman come over to Alvor with the visiting Vikings. We are all delighted to see him back on his feet and I am sure all Algarve bowlers will want to wish John a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the greens before too long.

The table does not show much change, Cats move closer to the league title on  126 points. Greens have 119, Vikings are on 110 and Harlequins remain on 101. Crusaders are fifth with 83 points, followed by Gladiators with 81, Amigos with 72 and Panthers have 71 points. Tigers are in ninth with 62, Sinners now move on to 58, whilst Nuts have 42 and Vulcans have 35 points.
